Historical Information
Frigates were the Erovan answer to the Nordur longship. While more archaic designs were based on ramming and boarding action, Frigates were highly mobile and maneuverable vessels with broadside gunports capable of inflicting deadly punishment to enemy ships. The trend of artillery-centric navies in the Kraken Sea grew rapidly after the Iron Cult rebellion. The more the artillery advanced technologically and was demonstrated to a shocking effect in the battlefields of Osteria and Munria, the more ships were designed on the principle to carry additional cannons. The old ship-to-ship ramming and boarding actions gradually fell out of fashion, with distant cannon volley exchanges becoming dominant, spreading all the way to Maorkisharra and the Inner Erovan Sea.

In Lower Varania, the gradual shift to grand fleet navies led to many rather heavy vessels. However, coastal patrols and other lesser escort duties remained a necessity. To cover that field, perhaps one of the earlier developped class of ships were put into work. The Frigate. Fast-moving and highly mobile ships meant for medium or short distance voyages, protected merchant convoys and later served as escort ships for larger fleets.

Due to their capabilities and capacity of escaping engagements, Frigates became famous to the corsairs and privateers of the Kraken Sea, able to hunt down merchant ships and fast enough to disengage and flee in sight of heavier warships.
