Strengths

* They have the speed to get around the battlefield and scout things out in order to keep the army from being snuck up on and to know where the position of the enemy is.

* Being on horseback gives them an advantage over most types of units in combat, as well as their own personal combat skill being above that of the average solider

Weaknesses

* Small numbers and they are less armored, because they are used as scouts and this makes them venerable to a concentrated attack by pikemen or heavier armored calvary

* Not easy to replace as you are replacing both the horse and the rider. This also makes them a logistical drain given you have to feed and care for both as well... horses where not cheap bro.

Historical Information

From monsters to cavalry, to Northmen shield walls and daemonic mages, the peoples of Erova have always been fighting for both conquest, or outright survival. In order to keep up with the tide, and enhance their performance in the field of battle, new and innovative war machines and practices are employed. Among the most important of these for any army on the felid even in the ever creeping age of the potential heavy use of Gunpowder weapons is that of the the calvary. This being used as both an iron fist or for scouting. That is what the Yaomen excel at is in the scouting role. Given they are less armored and because of their lower status they usually have a deeper connection to the land than a noble who lives in the castle.

This use of them as scouts has always proved effective and they can sometimes provide a cheaper alternative to the heavier calvary used by some nobility in clutch situations. They have done so for centuries and will keep doing so for many centuries in the future. It cost a bit to keep a large force of them under arms, but when supported correct by things like archers, pikemen, and calvary... the bread and butter of the military that they are starts to shine.
